The Problem

Why Is This Happening to Me?
One of the most common patterns we see from prolonged sitting is something called Lower Cross Syndrome. This occurs when certain muscles become chronically tight while others become weak and underactive. The hip flexors and low back muscles often tighten from hours of sitting, while the glutes, deep core stabilizers, and abdominal muscles become inhibited and weak.³
This imbalance changes the alignment and mechanics of the pelvis and spine, increasing stress on the lumbar discs and joints. Over time, this can contribute to chronic low back pain, muscle spasms, sciatica, poor posture, and accelerated wear and tear on the bones and discs in your spine.
Research has also shown that restoration and maintenance of the normal lumbar lordosis, or natural curve of the low back, is associated with improvements in chronic low back pain and function.⁴ Loss of this normal curve can increase abnormal stress on the discs, joints, muscles, and ligaments of the lumbar spine. This is one reason prolonged sitting and poor posture can become such a significant contributor to chronic low back pain over time.
Prolonged sitting affects more than just muscles and discs. The ligaments and fascia surrounding the spine can become stiff and less mobile. Poor circulation can increase inflammation and fatigue in the muscles. Sitting posture also commonly causes the shoulders and head to drift forward, which can create tension throughout the entire spine, not just the low back. Many people who sit all day also develop neck pain, headaches, upper back tightness, and hip stiffness alongside their low back pain.
What Can I Do About It?
One of the best ways to reduce stress on your spine during the workday is to avoid staying in the same position for hours at a time. A sit-to-stand desk can be incredibly helpful because it encourages regular movement and position changes throughout the day. You do not have to stand all day either. Simply alternating between sitting and standing can improve circulation, decrease disc pressure, and help reactivate muscles that become dormant during prolonged sitting.
If your workspace does not allow for a sit-to-stand desk, lumbar support (like a small pillow or rolled-up hand towel) can still make a significant difference. Supporting the natural curve in your lower back helps decrease stress on the spinal discs and surrounding muscles while improving posture. Standing up every 30–60 minutes, stretching your hips, walking briefly, and improving workstation ergonomics can also go a long way toward reducing strain on your spine.
