Spinal decompression is a therapy for you to consider if you’re living with back pain, neck pain or radiating pain into your arms or legs. Our nonsurgical approach works by gently stretching the spine, increasing the spacing between vertebrae. Here at Square One in Fort Collins, we use a modern computerized decompression table – spinal stretch table- as a tool to help provide you relief.
What is Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression care uses a computerized traction table that is designed to increase the space between the intervertebral disc. This stretching creates a hydration effect to the degenerative disc and a reabsorbing effect on disc herniations and bulges. Decompression of the disc causes a negative pressure within the disc that increases nutrition and hydration leading to healthier degenerative discs and stimulates healing to tears in the outer disc cartilage (annulus fibrosis), resulting in long-term healing of herniations.
Decompression is also designed to stretch the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, and scar tissue from previous injuries), reduces muscle tightness and elicits a relaxation and sedation effect.
What does Spinal Decompression Treat?
Decompression is designed to decrease the pinching, rubbing or other irritation to nerve tissue, reducing pain, tingling and numbness. It can also treat:
- Back or neck pain or sciatica, which is pain, weakness, or tingling that extends down the leg
- Bulging or herniated disks or degenerative disk disease
- Facet syndrome (irritation to the posterior spinal joints)
- Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots
- Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal)
What does treatment look like?
When you come to Square ONE in Fort Collins for spinal decompression care, you can expect to spend about 30 minutes per visit. To get the full benefits of spinal decompression treatment, you may need to schedule appointments for several weeks. Your personal information will be entered into a computer to deliver customized care for your spine and body. Treatments may also include physical therapy, chiropractic adjustments and trigger point injections. These spinal decompression adjustments will slowly help reduce your pain.
